Georgian
army at the level of its today's preparation is not ready to massive operations,
considers President Eduard Shevardnadze. He announced at the press conference in
Tbilisi that at this stage of Abkhazian settlement of primary task is the
maximum use of potential for peaceful settlement. As the Georgian President said,
if in this way result will not be achieved, they will have to think about other
solutions. Georgian army at the present moment counts to 20 thousand military
servicemen.
This
statement of Shevardnadze was sounded after the President of Georgia reported
that still he did not make the decision about the conclusion of Russian
peacekeepers from the zone of conflict in Abkhazia. According to him, to make
this decision is possible only in the case of obtaining the solid guarantees
from the side of United Nations and other states about the replacement of
peacekeeping contingent in Abkhazia. Without presence of peacekeepers, it is
very difficult to present the life of 55 thousand Georgians in Gal region, said
Eduard Shevardnadze. He emphasized that he will not hurry in making decision
about the removal of Russian peacekeepers from Abkhazia.
The mandate of introduced Russian troops into the zone of Georgian-Abkhazian
conflict under the aegis of CIS, elapses on 31st December. On 11th
October of the current year, parliament of Georgia adopted the resolution about
their conclusion and the needs for internationalization of the achieved in
Abkhazia of the peacekeeping operation. President of Georgia, Edward
Shevardnadze, personally must adopt final decision in this connection.

many experts consider that aggravation of Georgian- Abkhazian conflict is
practically unavoidable. The frozen negotiating process on regulating of
Georgian-Abkhaz conflict creates the risk of sequential escalation, it leads to
intensification of distrust, the probability of applying the power methods is
increased. At this conclusion arrived in particular participants in the sixth on
the calculation of the encounter from the cycle of seminar- dialogues on the
Georgian-Abkhaz conflict and the peaceful settlement were held in Germany on the
initiative of the scientific research center of Bergkhof on structural control
of conflicts (Berlin) and organization of «Resource of reconciliation» (London).
As it is noted in the press release of seminar, in the months, which preceded
the meeting in Berlin, occurred serious deterioration in the relations between
the Georgian and Abkhazian sides. In particular, the discussion deals with
October operations in Kodori gorge between Abkhazian subdivisions and the
partisans and northern Caucasians.
