The
editorial staff of Kavkaz-Center proposes the translation of Robert Fisk's
article, (published in the forum of Pravda.com.ua, and in Kavkaz.org), which
acquaints readers from its point of view to the situation in Afghanistan. And
although many clauses of this article, first of all, with Islamic religious
point of view, is incorrect, editorial staff considered, that for the readers
will be interesting very idea of article, which in contrast to other
anti-Islamic propagandistic materials shows personal side of the leader of
Taliban. Certainly, the opinion of the author is not deprived of subjectivism,
however, in our view, in his article, the specific tendency to refuse the
on-duty propagandistic clichés nevertheless is outlined.
From
the point of view of the West, the surrender of Kandahar by Mullah Mohammed Omar
symbolizes the end of militarized Islam in Afghanistan.
His personal rise and fall, from
the rural cleric to the ruler of the most closed state in the world, and in the
clay house back, he spent only five years. First compelled, then entertained by
ambitions of rural young fellow, his career tells in the miniature the history
of rise and fall of the most irreconcilable Islamic movement.
Was
Mullah Omar, the defender of Osama Ben Laden, his Moslem brother on the Moslem
ground, as he declared himself? Or, possibly, received a good formation, Ben
Laden did enlarge the horizon of modest cleric from Noudi, after describing to
him that corruption, with which Omar did fight in Afghanistan, did exist (and
was conceived) in Western world, which first supported, and then with the ease
threw mujahideen, after the war with USSR ended?
Journalists
usually write about Omar as about «shady», «reserved» personality despite
the fact that about the spiritual leader of Taliban sufficiently much is known.
He
did not pretend to be Messiah and he was not getting puffed up servant of cult.
Pashtun respect mullah Omar not only for his honesty, but also for his courage,
appeared to them, when he grew in the dust and misery in the province next to
Kandahar, being school teacher and anti-Soviet partisan.
He
lost his eye in the war against SSR, but he continued to battle with Communist
regime of Najibullah, who remained in Afghanistan after withdrawal of Soviet
troops. He fought as an ordinary soldier in the brigade of Yunas Khalis of the
party Hizb al Islam, and was injured 4 times.
Mohammad Omar
was born on 1959 in the small village of Noudi near Kandahar, in the family of
the impoverished peasant of the Pashtun tribe Houtak, his father died after
family moved to Tarinket in the province of Uruzgan, after leaving Omar, still
young, to care about the family. For this, he opened school not far from the
mosque of Sangsaar, where he prayed. He so did not finish his education, after
remaining mullah (in contrast to mavlavi - the title given to graduates of
religious colleges).
Afghanistan
around him collapsed, anarchy reigned. Pashtun, Tajik, Uzbek and Hazara fought
each other, while Northern Alliance (our today's «allies» in «war for
civilization») was busy in violence and robbery in Kabul. Mullah Omar called
them «bandits and traitors», who sold their country to foreign colonizers».
The same, he would say today.
Murders
and violence above women and children in Kandahar angered young cleric. Trade in
opium collapsed morals in the city.
The
first mission (in which he took active part, and which, subsequently, placed the
basis of Taliban) pursued the kidnap of two young girls, whom heads were shave
and were rapped by the group in the barracks of local murderous authority. With
his 30 students and 16 rifles, he saved girls and hung one of the oppressors
from the barrel of the tank.
His glory
reached Pakistani religious schools of Mawlana Fadlurahman, who heads
Jamaat-Ulema-Islam (party of Islamic scholars) and he was the ally of Benazir
Bhutto, who was at that time, the Prime Minister of Pakistan. In 1996, number of
supporters of Taliban grew each day, and provinces submitted to the protectorate
of young (certain of them was only 14 years) defenders of law, who followed
relatively young (at that time, 37 years old) cleric.
But
he himself remained constrained, and secluded person, devoting hours to contact
with God on his rug in the prayers. The cleric, who at first appeared himself as
reformer, but, when Taliban took large part of Afghanistan, that accepted the
radical version of the Sunni religious school of Hanafi, believing that the
responsibility of Muslims is the construction of ideal society, which, as he
believed, there existed in the times of prophet (A.S.S). Entertainments, public
role of women, leisure distracting from the matters, all these were in prospect
to erase. The exact interpretation of the Quran began to prevail above
Afghanistan. Instead of planning of the future of the country, restoration of
the economy of the most bombed-out state in the world, where there are still
near 20 millions mines, roads are not comfortable for driving, bridges are
destroyed and reservoir - he considered individual and group morals as the main
purpose of human society.
Therefore,
Ministry of Inhibition of Sin and Encouragement of Virtues was loaded by much
stronger work than Ministry of Economy and Defense. Punishments became training
process...
No
one knows for sure - how were formed relations between Mullah Omar and Osama Ben
Laden. The latter arrived soon after the victory of Taliban in 1996, and during
the subsequent years, the political statements of Taliban acquired (although
already and they had) even greater anti-Western and anti-American painting.
War
of Ben Laden «against crusaders and Jews», possibly was not supported by Omar;
however, his desire to conquer «Apostates of Islam», being located in
authority in the pro-American regimes of Arabian peninsula, could resound with
the early campaign of Omar against «thugs and Apostates» in Afghanistan.
Now,
when «Apostates» stand on the door of Kandahar, his early charges that they
sold themselves»"to foreign colonizers» may seem Mullah Omar’s prophecy.
Still on 24th September, he stated, that handover of Ben Laden «will mean that
we are not Moslems any more and Islam is dead».
Now,
Mullah Omar, according to reports, is present in the city, which he himself
extolled, however, his Taliban appear practically dead. If, of course, he does
not decide to act upon his word and fight (as he speaks) «to the last breath»
against Americans and «traitors» of the Northern Alliance.
