The
success of the military action of USA and their allies in Afghanistan, about
which speak American and British Generals, becomes ever more obscure.
In
this connection in the West more frequently is raised the question about the
expediency of continuing bombardments of Afghanistan, especially if one
considers the growing number of victims among the civilian population. «Bush
simply cannot declare about any victory in the near future, and this is
extremely dangerous, since, the pressure can impel servicemen to go to the
extreme measures. Now Americans must find possibility for conducting the ground
operation against Taliban in Afghanistan, notes the Netherlands newspaper «Folkskrant».
Americans
already begin to understand, that this war will be considerably heavier than
what they visualized. And the matter is not only in the tactics of military
operations and in the geographical special features of Afghanistan. The problem
of Americans consists, first of all, in the fact that in recent years, Islamic
countries developed the completely new concept: they wage war, in which
contemporary technology plays increasingly smaller role, as considered by
majority of military experts and analysts, who increasingly more frequently hint
at the lack of perspective of military operation in central Asia.
What
are the military and political calculations of the first three weeks of the
bombardments of Afghanistan? The rule of Taliban continues to exist, and Ben
Laden is surviving. The armed opposition is trampled down on the spot and bears
defeat after defeat, in spite of enormous support from the side of Russia and
USA. Troops of Taliban are as before combat-effective, and peaceful inhabitants
as before lost from the American and British bombs. Moreover, the ally of USA,
Pakistan proved to be on the threshold of the total people explosion, which can
involve the most unpleasant consequences for the western alliance. «Only blind
does not see that the Americans proved to be in the blind alley», considers in
this connection the Belgian newspaper «Suar».
Meanwhile
situation in USA itself remains alarming. Universal fear continues to retain the
consciousness of Americans. Bright fact of that confirmation serves periodic
warnings about the expected new terrorist attacks against USA, which are
declared by American authorities, so the US
Attorney-General John Ashcroft stated the day before
that the strikes on targets in the United States or on the American objects
abroad were possible in the forthcoming week. Ashcroft said that the obtained by
Bush's administration of the information about these attacks deserves confidence;
however, the methods of attacks and their specific objects are unknown.
According to Ashcroft, the American forces of law and order are brought to the
complete readiness. General attorney said that a similar warning could avoid the
attacks on 11 October.
By
the symbolic confirmation of the fact that American administration, as entire
society experiences uncertainty and anxiety, is the decision of President Bush
to visit baseball match in New York. And despite the fact that the visit of this
match was organized for purely propagandistic purposes (Bush and America not to
intimidate), but on contrary, from the appearance of the President of USA in the
stadium produced completely reverse impression. And actually, it is difficult to
convince people of the fact that Bush and America are not intimidated, when in
his own country, the highest leader of state is forced to be moved under the
cover of aviation, while not speaking about thousand colleagues of guard, police
and army commandos accompanying him on the ground.
