After
Putin's known announcement about establishment of official contacts between
Russian and Chechen side with the purpose of initiation of negotiating process,
representative of president Maskhadov through representative Ahmad Zakayev
addressed to the president of Georgia, Shevardnadze with the offer to mediate in
negotiations between Johar and Moscow. However, Russian side spoke against
intermediaries. In this connection, president Maskhadov in a press release
declared, that he is disappointed with position of Moscow and continues to
insist that the third party should be participated in the Chechen-Russian
negotiations. The text of announcement in the press release of the Chechen

of the President of Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, is authorized to declare, that,
despite of the fact, that there are consultations «about a meeting and fixation
of a place» between representatives of CRI and Russian Federation, Chechen
leadership expresses deep fear on the given fact.
Expressing
the desire to finish with military actions which resulted in suffering of all
Chechen people, we consider, that leadership of the Russian Federation refusing
from intermediary services of outstanding politicians and conventional
international institutes, tries to use the given fact of negotiations, as
attempt to lead world community into slip-up.
At
present today, we have no bases to trust Russian leadership, for this purpose we
wish to use institute of intermediaries, for revealing true desire of both sides
to finish with military actions in Chechnya.
We
insist on presence of intermediaries, if Moscow is sincere in the aspirations,
it has nothing to be afraid of presence in negotiations of intermediaries from
among the international organizations or the outstanding political figures,
capable to be guarantors in performance of tasks in view».
