Chances of victory on Caucasus are fading

War is proceeding for two years, and no signs of victory but losses are seen to Putin.

Recently the Western press, particularly American, even more often starts to recollect war on Caucasus. Evaluating from character of publications, the Western journalists ever less trust Kremlin, which persistently continues to report about its victories in Ichkeria. These statements, some times, look rather ridiculous and frequently contradict each other. So, exactly on the eve, the so-called commander the Russian paratroopers, General Shpak declared, that the situation in Chechen Republic is improving every day. As he said, commandoes already for a long time have successfully carried out all fighting tasks assigned to them. Day by day "insurgents" are getting weaker and already are not capable of doing anything significant. The Chechen commanders have almost been killed. Only Shamil and Basayev have survived.

Having informed all this, completely unexpected for journalists, Shpaк added accurately the following - " But paratroopers still very long will remain deployed in Chechen Republic! " Attentively listening Russian journalists, simply could not digest words of Shpak and to present to dear Russians though chekist Minister of Defense, Ivanov was called to aid, who in his turn promised place in the size " two to three " to all Chechens.

Similar absurd and unpleasant incidents continue to broadcast on the Russian telechannels in spite of the fact that Manilov has been dismissed, and Yastrzhembsky left in a deep underground and only occasionally, in cases of emergency, appears on television cameras. In general, as all efforts of Kremlin to find a military solution of the conflicts in Caucasus in any way can’t turn to be successful for Moscow and every employee of Kremlin continues to show the unattractive back to Putin and dear Russians.

Western journalists mark it. The truth of their estimation and comments are more sustained, than emotional Internet shots of the Chechen journalists. For example, in the newspaper "Boston Globe" is published comment of Syuzan Glasser, who specifies that the continuation of war in the Chechen Republic is starting to be negatively reflected in Putin's popularity. Two years back, becoming the Prime Minister of Russia, Putin declared, that within two weeks, he will crush Chechen mujahideen. After passage of a year, he declared victory in war, and in half-year again declared victory. "Now Putin avoids something to declare, - as spoken in article. – he stopped withdrawal of armies from the Chechen Republic. Last weeks escalation of retaliatory operations against the peace population is observed".

"Preparing public opinion for a long-term military opposition, Kremlin even more often will draw an analogy between the conflict in the Chechen Republic and such European conflicts as in Northern Ireland and in the country of Basque, - continues Syuzan Glasser. - However such analogies hardly are pertinent. For thirty years in the country of Basque was lost about 800 person, and in Northern Ireland almost for the same period - about three thousand. Whereas in the Chechen Republic only for two years of last war, according to frankly underestimated official Russian statistics, was lost 3400 Russian soldier and more than ten thousand are wounded. (According to the Chechen side, 30 thousand aggressors have been destroyed, edited by Kavkaz-Center) From the Chechen side, was lost one and a half thousand fighters and 40 thousand peaceful inhabitants, among four hundred thousand refugees ".

The Author of article refers to the statement of known Russian political scientist Andrey Piontkov, in whose opinion, Putin is compelled to recognize, that Russia again has lost war in the Chechen Republic, not having achieved any of the proclaimed purposes. If in 99 year, after events in Dagestan and explosions of apartment in Moscow, which Putin managed to attribute to Chechens, 70 percents of Russians supported full-scale war against Chechen Republic, last month for continuation of war, only 35 percents of interviewed have expressed; 58 percents support the termination of war and peace talks, and 75 percents consider, that the policy of the government has failed.

Female journalist quotes also words of Lva Ponomarev, in the past dissident and nowadays active worker of anti-war movement, who speaks, that the public opinion has turned against war, though people yet did not begin to protest actively against it. " When such statements will begin, they will be directed against Putin, - considers Ponomarev. - Putin became the president due to this war. Putin and war are inseparable in perception of people".
