mujahideen, against which Russian troops conducted battles in Argun Gorge, did
not cross the Georgian-Russian border, as the chief of the reconnaissance
service of the State Department for Protection of the State Border of Georgia
Irakli Kopadze stated. In
his words, this group of combatants could not have gotten into

Gorge from the territory of Georgia “for many reasons”.
Not only Georgian and Russian frontier guards but also observers of OSCE
control the entrance to the gorge in that part, he remarked.
Here also, in his words, the Russian aviation “practically constantly”
carries out observation, “moreover, often

invading
the air space of Georgia.” Today it is
practically impossible to get into the gorge through the territory of Georgia
because this part of the borderline is “a continuous minefield, the scheme of
which is unknown even to the Russian border guards themselves”, Irakli Kopadze
told. Head of reconnaissance is
convinced that it is impossible to get into the gorge through the territory of
Georgia by omitting its entrance, on the slopes of ridges, since they are
covered with much snow and any movement threatens with avalanches.
“The only route, which mujahideen could use to get from Georgia to
Argun Gorge is the air route, that is they had to fly over the border on
three-four helicopters,” he remarked. Among
refugees, who passed to Georgia almost two years ago, could be Chechens, who
participated in military operations, “but if they were fighters, they would
not sit 2 years in Pankisi Valley and would not receive refugee status,"
Irakli Kopadze emphasized. According
to his statements there has not been recorded a single break through the border
on the Chechen part of it.
