The
president of USA George Bush in a letter to President of Georgia Edward
Shevardnadze has confirmed the intention of Washington to develop friendly
bilateral communications and has stated support of the sovereignty and
territorial integrity of Georgia. The director of FBI of USA Louis Freeh who has
delivered this message in Tbilisi, has informed about it. Two-hour negotiations
were held between Louis Freeh and Edward Shevardnadze and were called "very
interesting" by the president of Georgia and has noted, that they were
concerned with "the necessary themes". Louis Freeh has informed that he
had "productive" meetings in Georgia where he has arrived on Tuesday
evening. On the eve of visit to Georgia, the director of FBI has carried out
consultations with vice-president of USA Dick Cheney, state secretary Colin
Powell, the assistant to the president on issues of national security
Condoleezza Rice. As an example of cooperation with Georgia Louis Freeh has noted
that during the last few years 320 officers of the Georgian intelligence services
were trained in USA. Louis Freeh has met in Tbilisi with two of them, graduates of academy of FBI
in Virginia. He has informed that in Tbilisi the constant
office of FBI similar to those already operating in 44 countries will be opened.
The fact of opening of such office will testify that FBI of USA is ready to
assist Georgia in protection of the vital objects - so Louis Freeh has replied on
the possible help of the American special services in protection of an oil
pipeline of Baku - Tbilisi-Dzhejhan. Louis Freeh has rejected assumptions, that his
visit is connected to issues of internal policy of Georgia. He has informed that
experts of FBI will take part in researches of DNA test of the body found out near
Kiev, and will try to establish, whether it is the corpse of journalist George
Gongadze who has disappeared in Ukraine.
However
some political forces in Georgia consider that friendship from USA will not
bring Georgia of anything good. Georgia becomes the ground of opposition between
USA and Russia, the chairman of Labour Party Shalva Natelashvili has declared at
press conference on Thursday. Meanwhile, he has told, on a background of
aggravation of the Russian-American relations, the administration of Georgia
lifts a not clear agitate on the visit to Tbilisi by the director of FBI of USA
- Louis Freeh. Heads of this American inetelligence service seldom go abroad, and
this event is usually not advertised, told Natelashvili. In a case with present
visit of Louis Freeh, as he said, all was on the contrary. Apparently, thus the
present administration of Georgia tries artificially to strengthen the authority
to keep its positions, told the leader of the Georgian laborites. Political
intrigues with which, according to Natelashvili, are engaged, trying to be kept
in power, the present Georgian administration will create serious problems for
Georgia on international scene. In this sense, told Natelashvili, it is rather
typical, that visit of the director of FBI of USA by strange image has coincided
with timing of the trips to United States by Minister for Foreign Affairs of
Georgia and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Chechen Republic.
