Basaev called Moscow’s statement a nonsense
Amir of Supreme Majlise Shoorah Shamil Basaev called nonsense the statement of Moscow that both he and Hattab are outside of Chechnya.  “Obviously Russians have great problems if they give out such gibberish,” stated Basaev.

Meanwhile, Chechen commandment continues reporting about escalation of fighting and offensive actions across the territory of CRI.  During the last day, the most active clashes took place in Johar, in Vedeno region and in Gudermes.  Offensive operations were carried out in Shali, Kurchaloi and in Urus-Martan, Vedeno, Shelkovskoy regions.  In Johar, mobile subdivisions attacked the sites of occupational army stationing in Avtorkhanovski district of the capital and, also, the so-called maneuver armored group of aggressors in Zavodskoi district.  The so-called “Lenin regional department of occupational militia” was fired at in Avtorkhanovski district.  Mujahideen applied grenade cup dischargers and machine guns.  As a result of an hour-long crossfire 2 occupants were killed.  In Avtorkhanovski district of the city a checkpoint of aggressors situated in the 3rd micro-district was attacked.  Chechen side reports about 4 OMON men being killed and a UAZ car being destroyed.  A BTR was burned and a BMP was shot in Zavodskoi district.  According to unconfirmed data, 8 aggressors were killed.

Not less than 10 occupants were killed in settlement Haji-Aul in Vedeno region as a result of an attack by a mobile detachment of Chechen fighters.  Headquarters of mujahideen commandment reports that the battle with aggressors lasted over 50 minutes.  In Shali, Chechen sudden attack groups performed two explosions of Russian military enginery.  In both cases BTRs of aggressors were wrecked.  In Kurchaloi, a minibus with 11 occupants was blown up.  In some reports, 5 OMON militiamen, who were in the car, were killed.  In Urus-Martan region nearby village Goiskoye a URAL vehicle was exploded; as a result, 3 soldiers were killed and about 6 were wounded.  Chechen side also reports about firing of the commandant’s office in the regional center of Znamenskoye (Chulgi-Yurt).  There is no information about victims.  In the outskirts of Shelkovskaya Stanitsa a BTR was exploded.  3 OMON militiamen were killed.  Chechen mujahideen commandment headquarters reports about local armed clashes in the settlement Zamai-Yurt.  Here, a subdivision of Internal Ministry of CRI led by Minister Aidamir Abalaev repeatedly engaged in battles with detachments of Russian paratroopers.  Serious losses on the side of occupants are reported.

Russians are tired of war in the Caucasus
Russian Doctor of Philosophy Lev Gudkov believes that the war in Chechnya was started by “conservative social institutions, which are losing their influence in the society,” Interfax reports.  “For them, the war is a way to keep their influence and convert their goals into those of common importance to the whole society,” declared L. Gudkov.  According to L. Gudkov, after explosions of apartment houses in Buynaksk and Moscow, attributed to Chechens without any proof, almost two years ago 80% of Russians “experienced fear and a feeling of revenge to Chechens”.  “This resulted in the supporting authorities, when Vladimir Putin promised to solve the Chechen problem.  The society revived, a effect of consolidation arose,” the scientist told.  Referring to Russian public opinion poles, the expert remarked that back in October 1999 over 70% of the population supported the actions of Moscow in the course of military operations.  “Today there are visible signs of tiredness of the society from the war in Chechnya; a state of deadlock emerged.  Now 46% of Russians speak for negotiations,” told L. Gudkov.

As regards conducting the war in Chechnya, citing expert estimates he asserted that “one month of war in Chechnya is a two-year social budget of the country.”  In his turn, Dr. Igor Yakovenko declared that “war is a hole that absorbs material and personnel resources, it leads to corruption, violation of laws, emergence of radical powers.” and added, ”It is senseless to make investments into a country leading a war.”  I. Yakovenko suggests that Russia now should spend its resources to “catch the train of modernity; otherwise, it will find itself in the rank of third countries.”

Cessation of the genocide of Chechens
Under the slogans of the soonest cessation of the Chechen people’s genocide and conduction of peace talks between Russia and Ichkeria, a conference was held in the office of National Defender of Georgia with the participation of representatives of Georgian society, human rights defenders and Chechen refugees.  As the participants to the meeting declared, “imperial policy of Russia in Chechnya led to the death of 250,000 Chechens.”  By accepting 7,000 Chechen refugees, authorities of Georgia expressed goodwill; now, it is necessary to raise the voice for ceasing the bloodshed,” conference attendants commented.

Azerbaijan must assist Chechen refugees
Azerbaijan has to facilitate the receipt of refugee cards by Chechens accommodated in the country.  Chairman of the Committee of Chechen Refugees in Azerbaijan Firidun Abbasov acknowledged this at a press conference held in Baku press-club and dedicated to the opening of the committee.  According to him, the goal of creation of the committee is to assist Chechens, who count about 7-8,000 in Azerbaijan, in receiving refugee status cards.  He remarked that Chechen refugees have been staying in Azerbaijan for over 1.5 years; however, until now they were not provided with appropriate status cards.  “Chechens possess a refugee status in Georgia, and a status of IDP in Ingushetia,” told the committee chairman.  Lack of the status doom Chechens to death of hunger since due to this they are almost not provided with international humanitarian aid; they also have no possibility to work.  The last scarce humanitarian aid was provided 1.5-3 months ago; therefore, Chechen families with many children are in great need.

New strikes of Chechen mujahideen
Chechen side reports about new attacks of mujahideen against Russian occupational grouping. According to the data of mujahideen commandment, detachment of Amir Abdul-Halim attacked an armored group of aggressors in the region of populated area of Stariye Atagi.  Aggressors’ BTR was destroyed and five soldiers were killed as a result of a short, 20-minute-long battle.  Offensive detachment of Amir Yakub exploded two URAL vehicles on the bridge in the settlements of Chiri-Yurt and Stariye Atagi; 9 aggressors were killed.

BTR and UAZ car are exploded in the Johar not far from the former square of “People’s Friendship”. The explosion took place at the moment of a military convoy’s passage from Staropromyslovski district to the center of the city.  9 occupants are reportedly destroyed.

Intense crossfire between a mobile detachment of Chechen fighters and an aggressor grouping occurred near populated area Janni-Vedeno.  Chechen side reports that a targeted mortar fire of mujahideen destroyed BRDM car of the enemy.  The crossfire lasted for about an hour and a half.  War helicopters were dispatched to aid aggressors; they made an attempt to neutralize the actions of Chechen mujahideen.   However, Chechen fighters managed to use the landscape of the area and retreated from the battle scene without losses.  In the course of the battle, not less than 7 occupants were killed and one armored car was burned.

An offensive group of Chechen fighters performed two explosions of armored enginery in Gudermes.  2 BTR were destroyed.  In Nadterechny region, in the regional center Znamenskoye, a so-called occupational commandant’s office was attacked.  The attack was made during the night of Tuesday/Wednesday.  Chechen side accounts that in the course of intensive shooting of the commandant’s office two aggressors were killed.

Hundreds of Chechen women carried out an action of protest in the center of Johar, blocking several streets.  The women demanded the arrest and hand over of the murderers of three men, captured by Russian soldiers and executed after brutal tortures on the 1st of May during a punitive action on the central market square.

Tahir Yuldash criticizes Washington
Leader of the Islamic movement of Uzbekistan, prohibited by Karimov’s regime, Tahir Yuldash critically commented on the inclusion of the Islamic movement in the list so-called organizations and countries, which, as Washington asserts, support terrorism.  Yuldash, whom Tashkent regime sentenced to death by default for “terrorism” and who now lives abroad, declared in an interview to BBC that his movement is not a terrorist group.  Tahir Yuldash also stated that the members of his organization consider themselves mujahideen and pursue the objective of ensuring Muslims’ protection in Uzbekistan and overthrow of Karimov’s bloody regime.

Baku concerned over “Wahabbism”
The activity of “Wahabbists” and other radical religious sects in Azerbaijan has reached a worrying level, believes deputy Minister of National Security (MNS) of Azerbaijan Republic Tofik Babaev.  At the meeting with the leaders of religious confessions of Azerbaijan, held at the Mayor’s House of Baku, Babaev declared that “certain religious and missionary organizations controlled by special services of Iran and a number of Arabic countries have established a goal of seizing power in Azerbaijan.” Azerbaijan agency “Echo” reported this.  According to the estimates of the MNS representative the numbers of the so-called “Wahabbism” followers in Azerbaijan has reached 7,000 people.  Over the last years 300 citizens of Azerbaijan had training in the “Wahabbist” centers in Dagestan.  Babaev believes that the “process of expansion of the social base of Wahannism and of formation the personnel of the followers of this teaching must be determinedly suppressed”.  The deputy minister proposes as one of the measures the introduction of an article of responsibility for religious extremism into the criminal code.  It is interesting that the Azerbaijan minister in his speech about the threat of “Wahabbism” mentioned Iran, which, as it is known, is a shee’ah country and is actively struggling against so-called “Wahabbism” itself, blaming Arab countries for its spread.  Due to this, most observers regard the statement of Babaev as a clearly political action.
